As much as I didn't want to, I thought about my conversation with my aunt the rest of the afternoon while Allen and I worked.
"What do you say we go out for dinner? I know it's not Paulina's, but there's a nice restaurant one town over. I think you'd like it," I said after assembling the chair and setting up the new computer. I even installed the accounting software and researched online reservation systems a bit more. The inn didn't need all the bells and whistles we offered in Chicago, but they needed something more than the pen-and-paper system they used out front. For now, I requested the Mystic Inn be added to the online Witches Network travel guide and paid for an advertising spot on the network (out of my own money because who knew if Aunt Thelma had it). It wasn't much, but it was a start. We had to get the word out about the festival now.
Allen glanced up from the ledgers, a pencil poised in hand. He looked skeptical. "Dinner?"
"You do have to eat."
Allen's eyes wandered over to his briefcase. I'd bet a witch's hat it was stocked with his favorite granola bars and maybe a box of high-fiber cereal.
"Doesn't an evening out sound nice?" I asked in all seriousness.
"I suppose. Can we make it an early dinner? I find that if I eat too late, I have a hard time falling asleep."
"Yeah, that's fine with me. How about I go up and change right now, and we can leave in thirty minutes?"
"I guess that would be all right."
"Okay. I'll meet you in the lobby shortly."
The Grove was the type of restaurant that people dressed up for. Thankfully, I had packed a nice dress, seeing as I thought I'd be attending a funeral. I shook my head as I thought about how different the last forty-eight hours had gone compared to what I had expected. As for Allen, well, he always wore button-up shirts and sweater vests. It was just his style, even for a summer evening out. I, on the other hand, took it a step furtherâblow drying my hair straight, adding an extra coat of mascara, and slipping on a pair of high heels.
I went down to the lobby planning to wait for Allen, but he was already there.
"Are you ready to go?" he asked, glancing up from his phone, which was magically back to working.
"Yes, you?"
"Sure, I guess so."
"Don't sound so excited," I said playfully.
"I'm not," Allen replied flatly.
"Right, got it." I smoothed out my dress.
"You kids have fun," Percy said from behind the counter. I gave him a wave goodbye. He replied by sticking his tongue out behind Allen's back. I smirked.
"Strange man," Allen said as we walked out to my car, referring to the poltergeist.
"He can be." I opened my car door and thought if only Allen knew the half of it.
It took about a half-hour to get to The Grove, and I was surprised how easily I remembered how to get there.
